YOGA
EQUITY
PROJECT

Free and incentivized affinity-based yoga classes and workshops designed to support and sustain the health and wellness of our BIPOC community members.

The Burlington Yoga Equity Project strives to extend the physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of yoga and meditation to everyone by addressing the inequities that have historically kept many people from accessing yoga spaces.

Inspired by the Yoga Equity Project modeled at Otter Creek Yoga, The Burlington Yoga Equity Project at Laughing River Yoga is shaped by our Advisory Council and guided by our founding tenets.

1. No one is free until we are all free

The Yoga Equity Project strives to confront the disparities that exist in the community by removing the financial barriers preventing some students from participating in wellness opportunities such as yoga.

2. We believe in the power of yoga to heal

We work to create healing affinity spaces where BIPOC students can let down their hyper-vigilance. We acknowledge not everyone is treated equally and work toward repair in our community.

3. Yoga Changes the World through Transforming Individual Lives

This project invests in BIPOC students and instructors to counteract racism and honor the beauty and value of Brown and Black lives.

4. Your Essence is Unconditional Love

We strive to create a more diverse studio environment for the benefit of all.

5. The Time is Now

Liberation is not a singular event. It consists of many tiny movements at the individual and collective levels to create the conditions for freedom. The time to make a change, to remember love, to do the work of liberation is right now. Our world depends on it.

Reviews

"This project has given me something to look forward to as well as a beautiful community to be a part of. I come here every week with my friend and we have really bonded with the classes!"

"Every week, I look forward to BIPOC yoga on Tuesdays. Getting the opportunity  to try this practice has changed my life in such a positive way. I feel like I navigate the world so much lighter and more intentionally. Because BIPOC yoga isn’t just yoga, it’s community, it's love, and it fills my cup in the best way!"

"Thank you for such a great class. It’s so inspiring for me to be in this class. Right now, yoga is not affordable for me, this program provides a chance to engage in real yoga and I felt more relaxed and calm after class."

"I am far away from home and was starting to become depressed. The series got me through the end of the winter."

"I could not have afforded it and would not have been able to go without the incentive. I can’t thank you enough."

"So appreciative of the emphasis on healing and being in community."
